Metacognition

I was at the movie theater last night, where I went to go watch Kill Bill vol. 2 which unfortunately was sold out at 1:00 am. Due to the sell out I ended up watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind which I might add is a decent movie, but that is besides the point. I was watching the previews considering I arrived a little too early, and I saw a preview to a movie starring Mandy Moore titled Saved!. The movie basically was kind of a teen date movie but was about religion and I couldn't believe it. The movie preview was more offensive than ridiculous considering the scenes that included, yelling at each other for almost sleeping with someone, throwing bibles at each other and a priest that ends up hooking up with one of the actresses. It looked like one of those many teen movies like She's All That or like something recent such as The Girl Next Door. Although it seems harmless, in my head it begged to ask the question of whether religion has become trendy. I can't believe they are pitching and marketing Christianity as if it is a pop-culture trend. Will we see a rise in movies like this? If anyone watches this trailer they will see what I mean... I don't know whether this is negative or positive but I have never seen a movie like this...

"Kill Bill" is still in theatres?

That's odd.
Eternal Sunshine wasn't just decent, it was awesome!

As for the Mandy Moore movie, I have seen the trailor, and I most definately will be seeing the movie. I think it's just to make the point that has been run into the ground about hypocracy among Christians.

I think it will have a good message...

I haven't heard of this one, or seen any information about it, so I'm off to do a search....but, based solely on what you wrote, I can't imagine I'll be sending my 14 yr old to see it!!

For those who are unaware of this film, here's a synopsis of it:

"Saved" Movie Synopsis: Good girl Mary can't believe it when she gets pregnant by her newly-gay boyfriend. She also can't believe the actions of her popular, relentlessly devout best friend, Hilary Faye, who's looking after her wheelchair-bound brother Roland, attempting to convert adamantly Jewish Cassandra, and trying to snag cute newcomer Patrick, a hip skateboarding missionary.

Sounds like it makes a mockery of more than one religion....standing by my opinion that I won't see it, nor will I allow my chidren to see it.

New-age, Kill Bill volume 2, the second part, its opening night was yesterday but it was sold out every where we went. I agree Eternal Sunshine was pretty good it made me actually think about my relationships in general. It caught me off-guard too because I was already disappointed from not being able to see Kill Bill. It was definitely interesting, kind of like the movie Memento ever see that one?

Poetmom, yeah it sounds crazy doesn't it, but I only speak of what I saw...

Whoa my opinion was conservative compared to the actual synopsis. Heh yeah now I remember Macaulay Culkin is the kid in the wheelchair, he ends up playing footsies with one of the girls...

I think this is hollywood's response to the popularity to The Passion. Yes, you're right when you say "pop-culturalize" religion. I forget how you put it. But that's exactly it.

I don't think it's as much about hypocracy among Christians, Trin... Nor do I view it as an attack. I see it as an inbetween. It's more of a "isn't this funny? Don't you think it's funny? Stick in the mud!" kind of thing.

I don't ever find it funny when someone veers from their moral beliefs. I think it's sad, whatever their faith. (As I've said before, we all have the same moral beliefs. And we're all equally bad at keeping them.) I don't understand why Christians are attacked more than others for having the same moral frailty as anyone else, now that you mention it, though. I understand someone despising our convictions, but human imperfection is a reality. It's why we all need to be forgiven for something.

It's still very fashionable in Hollywood to run down Christianity whenever possible.

Oh I didn't even see these replies until today.
Hollywood will produce anything they think will make money. Considering the hit that The Passion was, I'm sure they will release more films that deal with Christianity or any other religion. Music as well will follow suit. Speaking of which, I was listening to the radio and I heard the first mainstream RAP song that was called Jesus Walks that actually gets radio play... I don't know if this is the actual conviction of the artist or a marketing ploy but whatever the case it doesn't suprise me. It's all about knowing trends.
